A Costly Promise

Genesis 3:1-15

"I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your offspring and her Offspring! He will bruise and tread your head under foot and you will lie in wait and bruise His heel."

In this year's devotional, we are looking at the cost of Christmas. In our secular world, that is a subject that is talked about a lot in the Christmas season. Of course, that is not the cost we are looking at, but the cost to God. In our Scripture today, we see what, I believe, are two of the costliest times in history. First and foremost, the costliest thing that ever happened to mankind was the fall of man, when Adam and Eve decided to go their own way, despite what God said. If we would think for a minute on the cost to mankind that that one decision has made, it would boggle the mind.

God’s original plan was for man to live in the Garden of Eden, and have fellowship with Him daily. Everything was provided, even eternal life—it was truly paradise. But after the fall, when sin entered man’s heart, everything changed, and death entered into the picture. Since that time, man has been in a constant struggle for life. All wars, sickness, starvation, pain, suffering, and heartache that man has endured, can be traced to that one, big, costly mistake.

A mistake of that magnitude would require a remedy of equal cost. That brings us to our main Scripture today, Gen 3:15. There is a promise in this Scripture that is going to be the costliest promise ever—not for man, but for God. When we look at the promise that God will put enmity between the Offspring of the woman and the offspring of the serpent, it may seem to be no big deal. So, we don’t like snakes, at least most people do not, but this Scripture goes much deeper. The Offspring of the woman is not just everybody, but one person. Christ is the Offspring or Seed of the Woman the Bible is talking about. From this time on, a battle has been raging between good and evil. This is all pointing to the cross, where Satan struck the heal of Christ by nailing Him to the cross, but Christ sent a death blow to Satan’s head when He rose from the dead. For a clear understanding, please read the following Scriptures. Isaiah 9:6; Matthew 1:23; Luke 1:31; Romans 16:20; Galatians 4:4 and Revelation 12:17. This promise would cost God His Son. Such a costly mistake would require a costly remedy. John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Look to Christ today, and send a death blow to Satan’s head.
